Strategy of sensitive data. Tàctic encryption of data

After my last blog on cryptography ( “Why encrypt data on disk?”), I Got a message from a user the question “how to assess and develop a strategy for data.”

If you’re talking about IT strategies, I think it is an important step back and ask: “What business problem I am trying to solve?” Once you have clarified that, then you may ask: “What tactics and tools can help me solve? ”

In this regard, I would say that you do not really want a “Data Encryption Strategy”, because “Data Encryption” is not a commercial problem. When people talk about cryptography, the business is usually the problem: I have sensitive data and do not want poor people to read it. To dig into this business problem, here are some questions:

* What are the industry standard practice for mine?

* What bad things happen if someone has my data?

* What are the most likely attacks and if they occur-the most harmful?

* How is that poor people to get my data?
